On Categorizing Strengths

It’s good to identify strengths and put a label on it, because by naming them you can begin to more deliberately hone them and track your progress.

I also found categorizing them into three areas refined this process and helped me to expand my thinking about my (or my staff’s) strengths:

  1. Disposition (personality traits that are/could be considered a strength, e.g., calm)
  2. Skills (e.g., technical writing for non-technical people)
  3. Knowledge area/domain (e.g., food manufacturing)

Keeping the above categories in mind can also help you construct each of the strengths to be more powerful as a combined package. The combination of your disposition to remain calm, and skills to do detail manual work, combined with domain knowledge of medicine become more than the individual parts as a paramedic or a surgeon.
