Somewhere along my career, I found myself learning how to manage up, down and out (or sideways, if you prefer).
There are subtle differences in management style required for managing up (your bosses, including stockholders, and board members), down (your colleagues, your team), and out (the press, partners, peer executives).
Recently, a wise man said that if you are a CEO, and you aren’t spending most of your time managing up and out, you aren’t doing your job. “Yes, your staff needs you, but if you aren’t taking care of business outwards, you aren’t taking care of them either.”
