A Traveler’s Thought: On “Possessing Other Eyes”

“The only true voyage would be not to visit strange lands
but to possess other eyes.”

~Marcel Proust, In Search of Lost Time, Vol. 5, The Captive and the Fugitive

A similar theme keeps coming back to me when I think about traveling and returning to one’s homeland. It’s the newly gained perspectives, questioning one’s own filters, that become the omiyage (gifts from travel). Unlike the commemorative spoons, many aspects of the “other eyes” fade away. Perhaps its ephemeral nature that keeps us hungry for more.
