On Translation as Discovering Your Own Language

Erza Pound’s advice to a poet, as retold by W. S. Merwin, to write 75 lines a day.  He then went onto add that,

“At the age of 18, you don’t have anything to write about. Learn a foreign language and translate (poems). Translation is a way of learning your own language.”
