Sticky Notes of Thoughts

On Transcending Rules

“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist,” said Pablo Picasso.

I’m pretty sure e. e. cummings effectively broke the rules of capitalization and punctuation from the position of mastery of the English language.

Martial arts athletes speak of something similar: they have to master the rules and techniques so well that they can be made “smaller” until it becomes part of you.

And when you are surrounded by rules, as you do in government, to transcend the rules (not break them, but to have the rules work for you), you have to be more entrepreneurial, not bureaucratic, to be effective.
