Sticky Notes of Thoughts

…because some thoughts are worth remembering

On Impact vs. Output

The way I explain the difference between impact and output is by quoting Brian Eno:

“The first Velvet Underground album only sold 10,000 copies,
but everyone who bought it formed a band”

Output = 10,000 copies

Impact = more bands launched

I remind myself of this quote to take the long view once in a while, and also to take care when setting goals: do we want to be the biggest x, or the best x? It makes a difference.

(Related: what are we measuring?)
